On my Mac does the Messages application need to be open to be able to recieve messages? Or can I leave the app closed and turn on noticafactions?
The app needs to be running but you should be able to close it with the red x and it will still receive
When someone sends you a new message, you receive a notification even when Messages is not running.
Has anybody tested this?
Had to set
Messages -> Preferences -> General -> When I quit Messages, set my status to offline. Uncheck that preference, and you'll always be online unless you manually sign off.
No, the app doesn't have to be running. I get notifications of incoming Messages all the time when the app isn't running. However, for chatting, the chat accounts do need to be online.
I have that option checked and I get notifications of incoming Messages all the time.
