Instructions to update my iPad2 to iOS5.??

You will need to connect your iPad to your computer and update through iTunes. The upgrade process will back things up first.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect to your computer & click on the "Update your device using iTunes".

Tip - You may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily. Then download and install the iOS update. After you update to iOS 5.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).

Hi Tom,

Do you perhaps no of any alternative way of upgrading to ios 5 from 4 (i.e. no wi-fi upgrade option) without connecting to a computer? My "oldish" iPad charges only when powered down (10w ipad charger) but is not recognised by my pc (windows 7); I suspect the issue may be os related and therefore hoping to resolve with upgrade, but obviously caught in this catch-22; any help would be greatly appreciated!

Make sure iTunes on your PC is updated. Prior to iOS 5.1, there is no way to upgrade without connecting physically to the PC.

Thanks James; yes PC is running current iTunes version; so it looks like I'm stuck with half a "brick" for an iPad - not great! 😟

Did you look here for help with getting the iPad to be recognized in iTunes?

Yep, already been through the listed items previously. For some reason the OS is not recognising the cable connection; the hardware clearly does because the device charges when powered down.

Have you tried using a different computer ...just to see if the iPad is even recognized? If another computer's iTunes sees the device, that would point to your PC being the culprit and not the iPad.

Or was that step part of that troubleshooting article and you already tried it?

It was not part of the initial troubleshooting steps, but I've now tested on another PC and same result, so almost certainly the ipad.

At this point, I tend to agree. Sorry.
