How do I add a new folder in Mail

I only have the usual inbox, drafts & deleted folders in my mail box. How do I add more folders to allow me to manage my mail?

If you go to your email account in the Mail app and look at the window where your inbox, trash folder and sent folder are - if there is an Edit button at the top of the window - tap that and then tap Add Mailbox at the bottom.

If the Edit button is not there - you cannot create folders on the iPad. Your email account is not IMAP. Only IMAP email accounts can create folders on the iPad. Any folders that you would already have in an IMAP account would sync to the device as well.

You cannot create folders if you have a POP account - only with IMAP will it work.

I have an iMac with OS 10.6.8. I have set up a number of additional folders on Mail in order to save those e-mails I want to keep (e.g family, business, hobbies, etc) in the way I assume John Moana wants to do. However, I cannot see where these actually are, I have looked on Finder but can't see them anywhere. I am considering upgrading to Mountain Lion but want to ensure that my saved e-mails are fully backed up before I do so.

[I have just realised this is on iPad forum, will re-post on iMac]
