You don't. Your CC is charged as needed during purchases.

If you wish to add money to your account, use an iTunes gift card, not a credit card.  The gift cards are easy to find in retail stores.

When you redeem the gift card, the face value is added to your account, and then you can spend it down from there.

There are two ways to purchase with iTunes/App Store.

    1. Put a credit card in your account settings. Then, when you go to check out or purchase an item, it will automatically get debited from your credit card, so there is no need to "add money."

    2. Redeem a gift card as ed2345 suggested.

The balance that shows in your account is your gift card balance. If your purchase exceeds the gift card balance, the gift card balance will be subtracted before the remaining amount gets charged to your card.

I was very confused too until I finally figured the system out.

Ideally Apple would explain this better.. as it stands, it appears difficult to differentiate between the credit card on file and the balance one has from a gift card.

there is no prompt to ADD MONEY in the edit section as some of the steps outlined when you ask this question online suggest. there is just REDEEM gift card, which is simple enough to understand. but in the case where you have no gift card and want to "ADD MONEY" to your account, it is not clear that the credit card on file will be accessed for purchases. I presume this is "on purpose" so that you don't "limit" spending by just pre-buying a "credit" toward your account....this way there is unlimited space for purchase as long as your card is in good standing and has a balance available! tricky Apple....hmmmm.
