funny icons on top of photos

I have not found this particular problem before. Maybe they are from some website you visited and somehow got superimposed on your photos, how is a good question.

I would recommend that you trash your iPhoto preferences plist, repair permissions on your computer, and see if those help.

Go to User-->Library->Preferences->com.apple.iPhoto.plist. Drag that to the trash.

Use Disk Utility to repair permissions.
Restart your computer, relaunch iPhoto. Then close iPhoto. See what is on your screensaver. If the little icons have not disappeared, post back.

If Beverly's suggestion doesn't help there a screensaver preference file located in your User/Library/Preferences/By Host folder that you can try deleting.

I followed your hints whch were suggested by another user and it seems to have helped. But now iPhoto is being stubborn to close. I have had to Force Quit every-other time I open it. But the wierd over-phot images are gone. Any ideas where those come from?

Whenever iPhoto is acting up about quitting, and I have to use Force Quit, I do either a restart or shutdown of the computer. That seems to clean up those stray invisible temporary files that clog things up and can cause slowdowns. Try a restart, and if still having problems just shut down for a few minutes.

Seems to be working but the "ghosts" are back, albeit in smaller numbers. Strange condition and I have only seen two posts that have had this problem. Really wierd. I noticed after I ran "Repair Permissions", I had trouble getting Airport to connect. I would get a message that network settings had changed. I eventually got on but does running repair require reinstating settings? I ran it on the computer not the HD icon. Does that matter?

Try running repair permissions on the HD icon. Repairing permissions should not cause you to have to reset your network.

I have the same problem on my iMac. When the screen saver runs (seems to happen most often at night, don't know why), there are "ghost" images superimposed upon my iPhoto library pictures. Just as you reported, the original images are not affected, only when shown in the screen saver. The images are the same as you reported, too. "anime"-like pictures of pigs, pandas, etc., and also images of country flags. It definitely seems like some kind of virus (OK, I know Mac's can't get viruses 😉, so let's call it "prank-ware".

To all those still having this weird problem. If you have the screensaver using the photos in your Pictures folder, check to see if you have an iChat or AIM icon folder in your Pictures folder. If you do, drag this folder to another place on your hard drive and see if you still have the problem.

Lori's suggestion worked. I trashed the alias to the iChat icons folder that was sitting in my Pictures folder (along with my iPhoto Library), and the funky icons are gone. What a relief!
