Epson Perfection v500 scanner with 10.8

Upgraded last week, and now the scanner wont work

The Epson web site informs me that :

Description: The latest Mac OS X ICA scanner driver for your Epson product is available only via Apple's Software Update. Here's how to get it:

  1. Connect the all-in-one or scanner to your Mac and power it on.

  2. Select the User uploaded file menu, then Software Update.

  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the available updates.
Note: Software Updates may find multiple updates for your system. You may choose to install all or some of the updates by clicking on Show Details.

Compatible Systems: Mac OS X (v10.8.x)"

I dont want to sound completely daft, but where or what is the ICA scanner driver ? How do I use it ? I cant find such a beast anywhere

I spent some time on the phone with Epson tech support today, and from what I can tell, this "ICA Scanner Driver" is already inside 10.8 - and it's what ImageCapture would use.

They also said they are working on an update to the Epson Scan / TWAIN driver which is on the same page as the ICA thing - it's from 2010, so I doubt it's compliant with 10.8 (or 10.7).

I have gone through and deleted everything Epson on my iMac, and also the VueScan app which I had been using. Then I reinstalled the Epson Scan app. When I fired up Image Capture and changed its settings so I could scan text at 300dpi to a .pdf, I managed to get one page scanned before it died. :^( Since then, I haven't been able to get anything to work. Epson Scan also does not work.

This is killing me - I need to scan several documents a day for an HOA I'm working for, and also need scan-to-print. I ain't got nada now . . .

I'm wondering if a reboot each time after a failure like this would help. I really don't want to, but I may be stuck doing that.

Does anybody know if there's a generic TWAIN driver that would work in this situation?

Thanks . . .

Here's an update to this situation . . .

I should have mentioned previously that my V500 (and 5 other devices) are plugged into a Belkin 7-port hub. While there's no mention anywhere that this scanner may not work on a hub, I've been successfully scanning for more than 2 years and a couple of MacOS updates, and as a result, I didn't even think this would have been a problem.

I made another call to Epson, and their rep had me do several troubleshooting tasks. Based on the results, he deduced that there was a hardware failure. This is not what I wanted to hear, and quite confusing given it had worked fine up until the 10.8 upgrade.

While I was on the phone waiting for the rep to talk to his 2nd-level support, I thought about one more possibility: hook it directly to my iMac. So I unraveled all my USB peripheral cables, and put the Epson's cable into one of the iMac's USB ports on the back. Then I re-installed the v3.74 Epson Scan software (this is "epson13659.dmg" off their site) and the latest VueScan v9.1.14 and crossed my fingers. ;^) I started up Image Capture - no problem setting the dpi or adjusting the crop window (previous problems) - it scanned just fine! Then I tried Epson Scan - again, no problems whatsoever! Finally, I ran VueScan - everything worked exactly as it had in previous releases! Wow . . .

So I don't know what to make of this other than the scanner now seems to require being directly attached to your computer's USB port. Maybe it's the length of the signal path through the hub that's just a little bit longer, or maybe the hub's signal strength is just a bit lower.

@lyndhurst, I don't know if this is similar to your situation, but if it is, give this a try . . .

Hope this helps other people . . . And I take back all those negative comments about Epson software. ;^)
