Kernel Panics (Unresponsive processor)

Hi all

My iMac (2010 model) has been suffering from kernel panics since I got it in 2010. It is not directly related to Mountain Lion, as it has been a problem since Snow Leopard. Depending on how much I use the iMac, it happens every other day or so, and the crash report always tells the same thing:

Panic(CPU 1): Unresponsive processor (this CPU did not acknowledge interrupts) TLB state:0x0

The CPU number is not the same every time, but it is always about a "unresponsive processor". All reports state something about the Airport/Atheros, and I have a feeling that the crashes occur during Airport traffic, but I have no idea what to do to manually repeating the panics. It is not related to Parallels, as I just recently installed Parallels, and the crashes occured way before that.

If you have any ideas or suggestions, please look at the crash report below. Thanks!

One prominent reason for kernel panics is bad third-party kernel extensions. You have the following installed:

com.sophos.kext.sav 8.0.4

com.parallels.kext.prl_vnic 7.0 15104.778994

com.parallels.kext.prl_netbridge 7.0 15104.778994

com.parallels.kext.prl_hid_hook 7.0 15104.778994

com.parallels.kext.prl_hypervisor 7.0 15104.778994

com.parallels.kext.prl_usb_connect 7.0 15104.778994

com.Cycling74.driver.Soundflower 1.6.2

at.obdev.nke.LittleSnitch 2.5.3

I have seen the Soundflower driver implicated in many kernel panic logs, so the first thing I would recommend would be removing that software. (Be sure to use the appropriate uninstaller, provided with the software.)

If that doesn't help, Sophos is normally well-behaved, but I can't speak for version 8 in ML, as I have not tested that yet. I did have one person that I don't know tell me version 8 in ML still has some bugs in it, for what that's worth (not a lot). Try removing that and Little Snitch. I have the same version of Parallels installed, and it's not causing me any problems, so that's unlikely to be the source of the problem.

I agree that third party kernel extensions are a main cause of kernel panics. So removing Sophos, Parallels, Soundflower, and Little Snitch, at least for a couple days, and testing would be a good idea.

But if the OP has been having regular kernel panics since Snow Leopard, with the same warning "CPU did not acknowledge interrupts" this sounds like it could be a hardware problem to me. I think it's worth taking it to an Apple Store (or calling AppleCare at least) and asking.

Aug 11, 2012 7:23 AM in response to thomas_r.

Thomas,

Thanks for replying! The KPs have occured since 2010 with both Snow Leopard and Lion, so it is not directly related to ML. Also, SoundFlower was installed just a few days ago, so I guess that is not the cause.

As you point out, Sophos or Little Snitch could be the culprit, but as far as I remember, the KPs have happened without having Sophos installed. The only thing left is Little Snitch, which I definitely will try to uninstall.

Also, my iMac was struck with the WIFI drop bug in the latest 10.7.4 Lion update, and I believe it has been concluded that the Atheros hardware is kind of "problematic", so this might be related. The WIFI drop bug seems to have been fixed in ML though 🙂.

I decided to disable Airport and connect the iMac with a network cable to determine if that helps. Until now, no KPs, but a few days of testing is needed to determine the effect of disabling Airport. However, I am concerned that I am experiencing a hardware failure, and I should have done something earlier to claim a warranty repair.

Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction 🙂

Is it possible to do some king of stress test of the system to see if it is possible to trigger those KPs? Some kind of test application or... something?

Aug 12, 2012 2:12 AM in response to thomas_r.

I am in denial about my iMac having hardware problems 😝, so I decided to go down the "uninstall" road.

First, I uninstalled Little Snitch, but after a reboot and half an hour of testing, the KP showed up again.

Then, I uninstalled Sophos, Parallels and Sound Flower, and I have seen no KPs since. I checked my TimeMachine backups and it turns out that I have been using Sophos since day one (contrary to what I previously wrote 😊), and I'm sure that Parallels and Sound Flower were installed a month or so ago, so I am getting more and more confident that Sophos was actually causing these KPs.

I might be wrong, but as far as I understand, the problems usually come from kexts in the "Kernel Extensions in backtrace" section in the crash report, and I have no idea what Sophos might be doing with the Atheros driver...

I will keep on testing with the current setup, as I'm unsure of what to do to trigger the KP, but I am crossing my fingers that Sophos was the culprit. Thanks again for replying, Thomas and William.

Aug 17, 2012 8:43 AM in response to taylorsan

Taylorsan,

Well... Unfortunately I experienced a KP yesterday evening. To sum up what I have done:

1. Uninstalled Little Snitch -> KP after one hour or so...

2. Uninstalled Sophos, Parallels and Sound Flower -> No KP for several days! As Sophos was the only application that had been installed since "day one", I concluded that Sophos was the problem.

3. After a few days with no KPs, I installed Little Snitch again -> KP after a day or so :-(

I really dont know what to think now. It seems like both Sophos and Little Snitch cause problems, and I really dont think that these two different programs can cause the same fault, so... I am starting to think that my iMac is suffering some kind of hardware fault. In fact, I am going to my local Apple dealer tomorrow to let them run a complete hardware test. I am hoping that we can get somewhat closer to the root cause of these KPs.

I am not sure that your Mac is suffering from the same problem as mine. These KPs (always the same error) have happened to me since I got the iMac just under a year ago - and it has happened under Snow Leopard, Lion and Mountain Lion.

I will report back here tomorrow, if anything interesting is concluded from the hardware test.

Sep 14, 2012 2:59 PM in response to jrhansen

In case anybody else is stuck in a similar situation, I'll give an update of what has happened with these kernel panics.

I paid my local Apple dealer a visit with my iMac, and they ran a quick hardware test. They did not find any problems, as I had predicted. However, they recommended that I sent in the iMac for a complete test, as the machine was still under warranty.

I send in the Mac for the comprehensive test, and two weeks later the conclusion was: no hardware problems.

So... I setup the iMac back home once again, and started installing applications again (I had cleaned the machine for files and reinstalled Mountain Lion). This time I decided to NOT go with Sophos but Avira, but I installed all applications including Little Snitch.

After more than a week the iMac has shown no errors at all. No kernel panics. No nothing! 🙂

I am wondering what could have fixed the problem. I did reinstall the OS, but I have done that a few times before with the kernel panics still appearing.

However, I noticed that at some point during the quick hardware test, the employee did a reset of the NVRAM and something else, I did not get to see on their screen. I am still not convinced that this could have corrected the problem, and I am quite sure that I actually did that myself some time ago. Never the less it seems I have a fully functioning iMac now - for the first time since I bought it a year ago. 🙂

The point is that if you are experiencing these kernel panics, you should try to reset the NVRAM.

Jan 25, 2015 3:08 AM in response to jrhansen

Hi,

What was the final out come of this? I am getting a similar error. I upgraded to Yosemite and ever since I have been getting this error. I have even formatted my HD and gone back to Mavericks but still getting the error. Please see my error log below. Any help would be great. I am using Avid Media composer. However my computer crashes when I start it up and just leave it. Its normally around 1-2 hours. I have reset, done a diagnostics text, deleted the caches and also uninstalled and re-installed from a Timemachine back-up (pre error message).

Thanks

Jonathan.
