Why has power consumption nearly doubled on 13" MacBook Pro?

Installation of Mountain Lion on my mid 2009 13" MacBook Pro has cut battery life nearly in half. The cooling fan never stops running. I have turned off all applications but the finder with no significant change in power consumption. I have reset the PRAM and the SMC to no avail. The system nas 8 GB of DRAM installed.
