Macintosh IIvx

Long story short, I found a Macintosh IIvx in my closet, with all the cables and disks, what I remember is something went wrong and I had to reboot the entire system. Well, after I rebooted it I needed to use the disks which will re-install Mac OS 7.1, but it keeps telling me that there is something wrong with the "InstallMeFirst" disk.

I need help, I gotten to the point where I could make a bootdisk, but I need a formatted floppy (if formatted it takes too much space)

Welcome to discussions.
I've got system 7.1
The disk"Before you install" contains only a "compatibility checker",is a 800k disk, and isn't needed to install 7.1(at least on my SE FDHD).
You need install 1 and 2,Fonts,Printing,Tidbits.
You should also have 7.1 Disk Tools to start with.
At a last resort you can download a free version of 7.5.3 on Apple's Site(Older downloads). You will need a minimal System on your MAC with PC Exchange and Macdisk.exe for that.
Post back if you need more info

Hi Rainer,

If you take a look at the specifications page for the IIvx, you will find that a system enabler is listed. The Install Me First disks contained files that were not available in the basic system (here 7.1) when new computer models were released.

Without the correct enabler (in the system folder) the machine in question is most likely not going to work properly. A later system (such as the 7.5.3 that you mentioned, or the Network Access Disk 7.5) will run on the IIvx without an enabler.

Jan

Rainer,

Document # 8970 indicates that 7 Pro works, if an enabler is added. However, it also says that 7.1.1 does not work. This is a bit confusing, since 7 Pro, as far as I know, ought to be the same thing as 7.1.1. See also KB article # 15582. I do not have access to 7 Pro/7.1.1 (nor a Macintosh IIvx), thus cannot test anything.

Anyway, the downloadable System 7.5.3 should be fine (as is, without an enabler).

Jan
That 7.1.1 I have contains Enabler 001 on Installation 1-Disk,as well as 003,040,088,131,201,401
Denis Eddy, too, has told me it should be the same as 7.1.1 Pro(got all disks but no install 1 which I have destroyed wile using it),but seems to be a special set for the Powerbooks.
Thanks for that infos-I should open a new thread about this to award anything more than Thanks!
Rainer
IF the OP wants he can get what I have.

Thanks guys,

The only floppies I have are the "InstallMeFirst", Install, Install 2 and Tidbits, I wasn't sure if there was more, I guess i'm up a river with a broken paddle.

Im just learning about the Mac OS, so is there anyway someone could walk though step by step on how to make all the neccessary floppies on a Windows OS?

Thanks

Hi,

OK. I suggest that you begin by creating a bootable floppy. A typical procedure:

Download the freeware utility Aladdin Expander 2.0 (try a Google search for the exact file name).

A disk-image utility for PC will also be needed. For example, the shareware utility WinImage 6.10 (winima61.exe here).

Install the programs on the PC.

Prepare an empty PC-formatted 1.44 MB (HD) diskette through the FORMAT A: command in DOS (or via the "Full" formatting command under Windows).

Download the Network Access Disk 7.5 .bin file (Network Access_Disk7.5.sea.bin here). The Windows operating system may truncate the file name. Drag this downloaded file (as it is) onto the Aladdin Expander 2.0 icon (on the Desktop). Aladdin Expander will decode the file into an archive (document) called Network Access Disk 7.5, and automatically decompress the latter into a Network Access folder.

Inside the Network Access folder you will find a Read Me document and a file called Network Access.image.

Insert the empty PC-formatted diskette into the PC's floppy drive.

If WinImage is used, drag the Network Access.image onto the program icon. In the WinImage application window, select Write disk (from the Disk menu) or click on the Write disk icon. When the operation is completed, immediately eject and lock the diskette.

You should now have a startup floppy for the IIvx.

This is a variant of a method described in the 68000 FAQ ( here).

When the IIvx successfully boots from the floppy, post back for additional steps.

Ok, my computer was being used the past hour or so, so I couldn't do what was said. So I decided to see if I was being stupid, I turned on the IIvx and attempted to intall the necessary files onto the "Inside the Machine" but an error poped up, which looked like this:

Problems were encountered installing onto the disc "Inside the Machine".
Please quit the installer, restart your Macintosh and try running the Installer later.

Is that supposed to happen?

Plus, the Aladin Expander's primary mirror is, not there. So now what?

Well, apparently something is wrong. Of course, you can always reset the PRAM, and/or start with Extensions Off (the Shift key down), and then make another attempt; but this is hardly sensible if not all system disks are available.

Instead, the best idea may be to make a bootable Network Access floppy (see my previous message). Report back when you are able to start the Mac from this disk, and I will give you the details about how to continue.

Did you not find anything via a Google search for "Aladdin Expander 2.0" (please note the exact spelling)? Alternatively, something at ftp://ftp.allume.com/pub/archive/pc/StuffIt_Expander ?

The question-mark indicates that a valid system folder cannot be found by the machine.

The idea is exactly that, that is, to describe how System 7.5.3 can be installed (instead of 7.1); but first you are going to need a startup floppy (not supplied in the downloadable System 7.5.3).

So, once again, try to create a bootable Network Access disk on the PC (according to the information in my earlier message), then post back when this floppy allows you to start (and reach the Desktop of) the Macintosh IIvx.

If you have downloaded the (nineteen) System 7.5.3 files already, keep them as they are on the PC. Do not decode, unpack or alter them in any way.

There is only one genius-Jan. I've got a Disk Tools disk of 7.5 made today on my mac, also the Network Access disk. You will get the info for that from Jan again I hope-got it ,too,July 05. It's good for my broken URL's.
Good luck further on-as HD is working, you won't need disk-swapping.IF you download Macdisk.exe for Stuffit-take a time after 19 hour EST-the server won't be that busy.
