Why is "Detach Audio" disabled?

I have a clip and I want to detach the audio, but "detach audio" is disabled.

I have a feeling that it's because I'm inside a compound clip - and there is a rule I'm not being warned about that says something like "you cannot add non-audio to an existing video-only compound clip"

(I site that warning because I do get such a warning when I do the opposite "you cannot add video to an existing audio-only compound clip" - and the place I need to copy this audio, is in an audio-only compound clip, so I can't copy the entire clip)

However, if anyone has any suggestions as to how I can get the audio out of this clip, so I can copy it, I'd be all ears.

If only there was a "copy/paste audio" command, that would do it. I just need to grab the audio, exactly from that clip, and paste it inside an existing audio-only compound clip (remembering that this fact prevents copying the entire clip).

Ultimately, in desperation, I could find the original clip and add the "audio only" to the timeline at the place I want it, but it wouldn't be cut to the same In/Out points and so would be a major hassle to get the audio I need.

I figured out my similar problem -- the audio was already detached in the clip, and I just had to select "Expand Audio/Video". I'm leaving my question for others with this problem to find if they are looking.

I've go the same problem, I can't detach audio either, and I'm not using auditions. I've tried in the compound clip and the individual clip to no avail. The compound clip is also used in a multi-cam clip, I wouldn't think that would matter but am at a loss.

I don't know why you're having trouble detaching audio -- you should be able to detach the audio from a compound clip without opening it in a timeline.

However, if you open the compound clip, select the clip with the audio you want to copy from the Event, type Shift-F and the original clip in the event will have exactly that edited "range" selected. You can then set Audio Only (Shift 3) and line up the playhead at the start of the clip in the storyline and type 'q' to attach it in the storyline at exactly the same point... same in/out points... no hassles.

That doesn't work for me.

I import an AIF music file and insert it into the timeline. Thereafter, I am unable to Detach Audio. The Detach Audio command is grayed out. It is NOT an audition clip. It is not a multicam clip. It is not a video clip. There is no video information. Yet I cannot separate it from its dummy video track. How can make the imported AIF file just an audio track?
