So how safe is the "cloud"

This is nothing new to any Mac user or anyone in the IT world but choosing to host you're information in the cloud can prove to be risky business. Private companies and governmental institutions are still very wary when choosing to migrate their info to a cloud solution. Most will opt for a hybrid solution and keep their "Valuable information" in their private cloud and host the rest in a public cloud solution....bla..bla..bla

With that being said how many feel comfortable using ICloud with the New Mountain Lion?.....I already heard a few stories about how some people had their information compromised. I mean its great to be able to sync it all real time in the cloud in a heartbeat but at the expense of your privacy. Not saying apple is selling this info to anyone or doing any shady business.....but I'm talking peace of mind.

In any case I've chosen to take some time and reflect before using ICloud.....but until then can anybody guide me on how to sync Notes, reminders and all the cool stuff between my IPad and my MacBook pro withouth using ICloud?

P.S....I love Mac!

I believe most content can still be synced between an iPad(/iPhone/iPod Touch) and a Mac via the sync cable and iTunes, though I'm not sure how much of that has changed since iOS5 was released, which one of the main new features was iCloud integration.

I use iCloud for Notes, Contacts and Photos and have not had any issues. I thought ahead when I created my AppleID, as I do with all online accounts and used an email address that is for my AppleID only.

For notes at least you can't. It's bloody stupid.

Either Apple adds the functionality back or I'm gone.

The next iPhone is coming out, if this does not get sorted out by then, I'm probably going to get another phone - I'm willing to drop to the phone's "file access" mode if I have to. All I wanted was to keep data between my devices synced and my data is to stay only on my devices, no where else. I don't care if I have to connect a wire and manually sync it.

Notes is a bit unique in that it works as a kind of specialized email.

If you open System Preferences>Mail, Contact & Calendars and click on an IMAP email account in the sidebar you should see, at minimum, Mail and Notes.

Reminders are a little different. If you have a Yahoo or Gmail account they support Calendars & Reminders in addition to Mail and Contancts

Keep in mind though that any syncing done by an IMAP account or Yahoo or Gmail you're still as much in the cloud as you are with iCloud.

You'll need an IMAP email account to synch notes. You can turn off the Mail part if you don't want to use that. But you'll need either an iCloud account (again you can turn off everything ecept Notes if you want) or some other IMAP account.

Let me put it this way. Since I started using my iPhone 4 and MacBook Pro, my notes have synced without any mail account - no third party servers, nothing - it synced direct between the phone and my Macbook under the heading "On my Mac". I plan to keep it that way.

So that's what i tought.....so the new iCloud features within Mountain lion such as syncing notes, reminders and all the other good stuff can only be done through using iCloud....if not the regular calendar, contacts, mail accounts are the only thing you can sync???

I guess i have no choice but to get icloud....i really want to sync all that stuff also!!! 😟
