time machine very slow

I first back of by hard drive is taking FOREVER. It has been running for over 12 hours and is still under 9 GB backed up of 249 GB. Show I stop erase and start over?

it is a 1 TB Seagate USB 3.0 Cable. it is formated as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) just like the internal HD
