iLink Cable

Sorry if this is OT for this forum...

I got a Sony Handycam DCR-HC36 and it would appear that I need an iLink cable to make it talk to iMovie as the USB cable won't work for iMovie. Correct me if I'm wrong, but iLink is just a fancy term for 4pin - 6pin Firewire 400, right? There is no adapter or module I have to get in order to be able to connect the Handycam to my Powerbook (17" 1.5Ghz)? The Handycam has an iLink (4pin) port on it.

Also, assuming iLink is just a buzz word and nothing special, are all Firewire cables created equally? If I don't pay the extra $50 for the Sony branded glorified Firewire cable, are there really going to be any issues with image quality, etc?

that is NOT true...at least not for me. I am so irritated that after spending over a thousand for this camera they fail to tell us that the ilink cable is the only way to get film into the computer or any other recording device.

Both my G5 and 5 month old DVD burner will only read the signal from fire wire momentarily then loose the signal.

Through I movie the camera is seen but no image is available.

Any suggestions?

After getting an Ilink cable it looks like I will also have to get a card for my Mac to to read it too!

Anyone who has one please let me know before I return the camera. I am not too interested in upgrading hundreds of dollars for this camera when there are others that work fine.

Thanks

Klaus, I mentioned - in another thread - that instead of struggling on and on trying to get a camcorder to import into a tower Mac, several people have bought a separate FireWire card. I think that's what the message (above) is about.

Those who've bought a separate FireWire card use that for importing, and have reported no problems getting their camcorder recognised.

But that's just a simple remedy for a tower-case Mac. [..I can't remember the old name for them before 'Mac Pro'..]

They did (do) have built-in FireWire (..thanks, Matt; 'PowerMac', of course!..): older ones with FW sockets at the back, newer ones at both back and front, but people did (do) sometimes have trouble getting their camcorder recognised.

Many have reported that buying and inserting a separate FW card in a spare card socket in the tower case, and using THAT for connecting a camera, has solved their problem.

[NOTE: I have a tower 'PowerMac', but have never had this recognition problem.]
