Technical information says that 3G is used to support GPS function. I want to use the ipad for navigation in remote areas where no 3G connections will be available. Anyone knows how relevant the 3G is to the effectiveness of the ipad GPS? Will the GPS connection, without 3G connection, be good enough for navigation?

The GPS chip in your iPad will work even if you do not activate 3G service. So the answer to your question is it is not that relevant.

GPS with an iOS device uses A-GPS or assisted GPS, which speeds up the initial GPS acquisition from a cold start only. GPS will still be functional without having a data or internet connection via a cellular network, but an initial acquisition from a cold start will take longer without it.
