Hi

You have a corupted preference file, possibly the com.apple.Finder.plist, but it may be another.

You could try running "Repair Permissions" on the boot volume, but I don't think that will resolve your problem.

You can delete all com.apple.xxxxx.xxx preference files, log out & back in to your account, and try again. All preference files will be recreated. You will of course lose many User settings, but there is no easy way round this that I am aware of.

You can also create a new account, and move all you stuff over, but you will still need to be careful about transferring your existing preferences.

Hi

If it will no longer read any discs (do they eject themselves?) regardless of the account you are in, the drive may in fact be dying and/or in need of a lens cleaning.

Lens cleaning is best accomplished by dismantling the drive, which has made a difference for some users.

Should you need a replacement drive, the NEC ND-4550A is a viable option in the UK, I believe others have found it at reasonable prices. If you know anyone over here, Pioneer DVR-110/111 or ND-3550A (US version of ND-4550A) are under $40 online...

The guy has an OEM Apple supported burner. It is either hardware or something in his system (corrupt cache file or preference folder) that may be caused by RAM or something else.

He does NOT need patchburn and the guy trying to help has helped a lot of users.

A quick look at the optical drive database, searchable, on http://www.xlr8yourmac.com for the Pioneer 104 might be in order. There is even an entire updated report on using Patchburn there.

Also, a lot of superdrives that weren't supported before w/o using patchburn, are now under Tiger.

I am having the same problem.
It did finally recognized a blank disc. Started to burn then stopped
the disk is ruined the files are there but unreadable in any computer.
It will play regular DVD if you "Sweet talk" it.

I have
1. reset the PRAM
2. Force quit the Finder

I have a Quicksilver running OS 10.3.9
The external DVD drive is a Plextor PX-716A

Thanks for all your help people. I have successfully managed to burn 2 dvds now....hurrah!

But it is still hit and miss. Sometimes get the error message. Sometimes disc just gets spat back out without registering. Sometimes hear it skipping and cannot eject it and have to restart.

Resetting the PRAM does seem to have some effect on occasion but it is still not functioning correctly and burning is only x1 speed.

Will keep checking back for updates, your help is appreciated, thanks again.
