Verizon iPhone 4S iMessage activation without apple ID

I would like iMessage to work on my iPhone 4S iOS 5.1.1. I don't want to enter an apple ID for various reasons. That's not a problem, according to apple <http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4268> :

"iPhone automatically registers your phone number for use with FaceTime and iMessage during activation."

Except that it is a problem aparenly. iMessage won't activate. It says that it's "Waiting for activation".

I've tried following the troubleshooting guide: <http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4268> but nothing seems to help.

I've Erased All Content and Settings, I've tried resetting, hard resetting, etc. No luck.

Does anyone have a Verizon iPhone 4S with iMessage enabled with their phone number as the Caller ID?

Contact Verizon and make sure you don't have any blocks on you text messaging (e.g. Premium text blocking). It appears that these types of blocks prevent the initial activation text from being sent properly.

For what it's worth, I was not aware (and that KB article is ambiguous) that it was possible to activate iMessage without and Apple ID. Once activated you can send from your phone number as well as Apple ID.

If a user has an MDN ending in four zeros (0000), they will not be able to send iMessages from their phone number. They can still send from an email address. If they wish to send from a phone number immediately, user would need to change their phone number to a number not ending in 0000.

Also AppleCare escelated my case and an iPhone engineer confirmed that four zeros in a row was a problem for them.
