Q: how to transfer photos to ipad from camera using camera connection kit?

Hello everyone,

I bought a used genuine apple connection kit (but only one peace, for usb) on ebay.

I just tried to connect my camera to iPad and nothing is coming up. I would have thought so the iPad would start something automatically.

Is there a way I can try to upload photos manually? What do I need to do on iPad? Where to look? what to open?

(I have no photos on iPad yet)

(and, please, no advice how to do it using computer, as I don't have one)

Thank you for your help.

If there are any photos on your camera then the iPad's Photos app should open and you should get a selection screen for which photos to import. The kit is firmly inserted into the iPad ? Does your camera have a menu setting on it to enable PTP (Photo Transfer Protocol or Pictbridge) or Mass Storage Device ?

Can you please explain how you are connecting the camera to the iPad using the camera kit. Via usb or by inserting the SD card in the second adapter?

There are also instructions here that include trouble-shooting tips.

Thank you guys for such quick and great response!

I found PTP on the camera menu and set to that (it was on Mass Storage Device). And photos came up straight away. I just did some transfering, it's fantastic!

    Just something else:

Like you suspected, the kit may not have been firmly inserted; when I tried it very first time, it didn't seem to go in at all. Although I was scared to damage the slot, I tried harder. So then, after I took your advice how to transfer photos and I finished doing that, on the camera settings I changed it back to Mass Storage Device and connected back to iPad to see if anything happens. And the photos came up again. So, does it mean it didn't work before because the usb adapter (kit) was not firm enough? (Because I am going to use another, older sony photo camera to take pictures and I will want to transfer them to iPad. but I don't know if there is an option for PTP or MSD on the menu setting.)

Also, now I have another problem. I have an olympus digital dictaphone. I also tried to connect that to iPad via the kit so I could trasfer some audio files onto iPad. But nothing is coming up. And there is no real menu on this device, just folders. Is there anything I can do?

Really Big Thank You for your help! So happy I've achieved something!

I assume that it wasn't originally fully inserted - as long as you push it in straight (and pull it out straight) you shouldn't damage it or the iPad (and you may find that it gets a bit less tight with use).

In terms of the dictaphone, I don't think that that will work. The kit only works with the iPad's Photos app and it expects the names of the photos and videos on the camera (or on the SD card for that part of the kit) to be in a particular format i.e. a DCIM directory off the root of the card with the photos beneath that with filenames exactly 8 characters long plus the file extension.

    Something else about Olympus:

The files are ".wma". Could that be a reason the iPad is not 'reading' it? (because I've read somewhere the iPad does not support wma format).

I can convert the files on the computer to the format that iPad supports. But how will I transfer them from computer to iPad? (I can not use iTunes and do sync, because computer is not mine)

I also read somewhere that I could email the files to the email address that is on "mail" app on iPad. Is that true? How would I need to do that? I mean, where and how do I save them on iPad?

    Thank you!

I was just writing a message about olympus, and only after I posted it I found your last message.

No, iOS does not support wma but that is proably not the reason it doesn't work.

I'm lost on how you would convert and sync without a computer. But you might want to try looking for a setting in the dictaphone that will save memos to another format. If you can do that, it's worth a try to see if the iPad will then see it.

    I'm not hopeful though.

You answered my question about format, while I was still typing the question.

What about that email transfer? I forgot to mention, there aren't that many files, so I could easily email it one by one.

Even if you could get them on the iPad, there is no way that i know to then forward that via email - except through iCloud syncing to a computer again.

You should be able to email them as attachments to yourself, open the email in the Mail app, and then press and hold the attachment and do 'open in' to save them to the Photos app. But if they are in WMA format then you will need to convert them into a compatible format first before emailing them - WMA files aren't natively supported on the iPad.

To save an attachment (from the iPad manual) :

Touch and hold the photo or video, then tap Save Image or Video. The item is saved to your Camera Roll album in the Photos app.

That is very helpfull. Just, can I only save them in photo app? what about creating a new folder or separate app? also, they are audio files.

iPAd does not have a traditional file system like you are used to on a computer. The paradigm of folders and subfolders doesn;t exits.

Not sure that audio only files will work with the Photos app, but you could try it with one. You might need to find an app from the app store that supports WMA files (search for wma and see what you find) and you should then be able to use the similar 'open in' approach in Mail to copy them to that app - some apps also support transfer to/from them and a computer via your wifi network (their description in the store and/or the link from their page may have info as to what they support), so if you find a 'wma' app you might be able to transfer via wifi instead of emailing them.
