Can't get audio out of monitor while in clamshell mode

can anyone help with this? I just purchased a Samsung 23" sync attic 550 series. Hooked it up with mini port-hdmi adapter. Great monitor-all works and looks great but no sound- only out of my mighty little MacBook air.

MacBook Air, iOS 5.1.1

Is it an option in System Preferences > Sound > Output tab. If so, select it.

Same problem here. I have an MBP hooked up to an external monitor, but my headphones get no sound (checked sound preferences, rebooted etc.).
