Q: Why doesn't my MacMini and Apple TV recognize each other with Wi-fi on?

I'm using a Mac Mini with Wi-fi....why doesn't my Mac Mini and Apple TV recognize each other when I turn Wi-fi on?  And I thought  this would be a very simple operation for a MAC.  I'm ready to bring the Apple TV back. Can anyone help out there?

Mac mini, Mac OS X (10.7.4)

The Wi-fi that comes with the Mac mini is not intended to act as a base station but rather to connect to a Wi-fi router.  I'm not sure the Macmini Wifi could be configured as a Wi-fi router but in any event problem solved with the purchase of an Airport Express which allows the wireless connection to any number of 802.1 devices. No problem setting up a Wi-fi net with the Airport Express.
