Freezing - and now kernel panics - under ML on MBP early 2011

I have random freezes occurring no matter what I do. Here's two error logs:

- The most recent one: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/32622103/console2.log

- The one before: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/32622103/console.log

Something out of the ordinary maybe: "**** Debug info for *possible* hang in MAIN graphics engine ****"

Here's the error log for the most recent kernel panic: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/32622103/kernel%20panic.doc

Gonna call Apple tomorrow as I still have ML phone support. Any ideas until then?

You have to update and/or remove the follow kernel extensions:

com.regularrateandrhythm.driver.RowmoteIREmu 1.0

com.shapeservices.msm.driver.MSMFramebuffer 3.2.0

com.avatron.AVExFramebuffer 1.6.5

com.senstic.driver.PocketAudioDevice 1.1

com.shapeservices.msm.driver.MSMVideoDevice 3.2.0

com.avatron.AVExVideo 1.6.5

The ones you have are not compatible.

Thanks, but a few questions: how do you know it's these extensions? I don't know how to read logs :-/ sorry.

Also, how do I remove them? For most of them, I didn't even know what they were. For example, I googled Avatron and found that this refers to Air Display, and also found this website:

http://blog.avatron.com/post/28135386805/kernel-panics-mountain-lion-and-bluetoo th

according to which version 1.6.5 should fix the problem (I have this version installed).

Many thanks for your help already!

It's always the extensions 🙂.

You will have to track down an uninstaller or uninstall instructions. You have to make sure to remove it completely or else it will cause additional problems.

You may have some extensions that work fine in Mountain Lion, but the best course of action is to remove them all and make sure it is running properly. Then add back the ones that are supposed to be compatible. If that runs fine, then you can start to take more risks. If you get panics again, then you have isolated the cause.

Kernel panics can also be caused by hardware failures. That is why it is important to remove all 3rd party extensions when diagnosing problems. If it panics with only Apple software running, then you take it back to the store. That can't be fixed without a screwdriver.

Aug 13, 2012 12:41 PM in response to etresoft

OK so I removed them except Air Display (use it regularly, gonna wait if there's another crash first). Also, I'm not sure what this relates to:

com.shapeservices.msm.driver.MSMVideoDevice 3.2.0

Googling SEEMS to indicate it refers to iDisplay, but I already uninstalled this days ago (due to an unrelated cause) with AppCleaner (so all of it should be gone - but it's note?).

Aug 13, 2012 12:48 PM in response to kkraemer

I think it is part of some mobile messaging platform. Why it needs a kernel extension I have no idea. Look for the file in /Library/Extensions or /System/Library/Extensions. You use Finder > Go > Got to folder and type in those paths. Move the file to your desktop and reboot.

But before you do that, maybe run a little program I wrote recently. Download EtreCheck from http://www.etresoft.com/download/EtreCheck.zip, run it, and paste the results here.

There could be other parts of that software you need to remove. EtreCheck will list them.

Disclaimer: Although EtreCheck is free, there are other links on my site that could give me some form of compensation, financial or otherwise.

/Library/Extensions is completely empty.

I removed "MSMVideoDevice.kext " from /System/Library/Extensions. I searched for "senstic" or "pocket" but didn't find anything..

That directory is supposed to be reserved for Apple's use only. Third parties are supposed to use /Library, but sometimes they don't.

Kernel Extensions:

com.avatron.AVExVideo Version: 1.6.5

com.shapeservices.msm.driver.MSMVideoDevice Version: 3.2.0

com.Cycling74.driver.Soundflower Version: 1.5.2

com.avatron.AVExFramebuffer Version: 1.6.5

com.shapeservices.msm.driver.MSMFramebuffer Version: 3.2.0

Is this output from after rebooting? Those com.shapeservices should be gone now.

Is com.avatron your iDisplay software? Ideally, it is best to remove any that could cause a kernel panic to make sure it isn't a hardware issue. Then you can put back things that are supposed to work.

I have seen very, very few kernel panic logs that did not include the "Soundflower" extension.

How many Dropboxes do you need?

Nothing here should cause a kernel panic but they could slow down your machine.

Aug 13, 2012 2:11 PM in response to etresoft

Forgot to reboot :-S But I have no idea what that Soundflower thing is. Googling just me some soundcard utility that I don't recall installing...

Also, I was away from the computer for maybe 30 or 60 mins and when I came back, the background image of my external (used as primary) display had disappeared, or rather, been replaced by a grey background. Relaunching Finder or even trying to change the image didn't help, though a reboot did.

Also, no idea why I have so many Dropboy apps. The Applications folder shows only one.

Here's the new output:

Soundflower seems to be an open-source library for re-routing audio. I'm sure the intention is to siphon off the output to make a pirate recording. Regardless of whether you should run it or not, if you don't want kernel panics, run the latest version or remove it.

I don't know what the Avatron software is. If you continue to have kernel panics, remove that too.
