My current iPhone 4 iOS version is 4.2.1 and I'm not able to update to iOS5. How do I get from 4.2.1 to 5.x.x? I have attempted to update several times, but always get an error message. Do I need to upgrade to 4.3 first? I have also attempted to update my iPad2, also with the same problem.

Has this iPhone been previously hacked to unlock it or jailbroken?
If yes, I would suggest you Google that error message.
No. I've owned it the whole time and haven't had issues.
So is this phone locked to a cell provider?
You might try disabling ALL of the antispyware/antivirus software and opening the firewall on your computer. Or try restoring it on a different computer.
