Airplay mirroring not working

When I try to use Airplay mirroring with my Apple TV and MacBook Pro Retina running Mountain Lion, the TV screen goes black but then nothing happens. How do I troubleshoot this?

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), OS X Mountain Lion
