Q: Time Machine completed a verification of your backups. To improve reliability, Time Machine must create a new backup for you.

This is the error I am receiving.

Time Machine completed a verification of your backups. To improve reliability, Time Machine must create a new backup for you.

Click Start New Backup to create a new backup. This will remove your existing backup history. This could take several hours.

Click Back Up Later to be reminded tomorrow. Time Machine won’t perform backups during this time.

Can anyone tell me why?  The last back up was July24th.  I am afraid to start a new back up if I have to erase everything first.

My Mac OS X version is 10.7.4

Need help with this, as I am very confused why it stopped working.

Time Capsule 802.11n (4th Gen), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Interesting analysis.  It seems to make a lot of sense.  One way to validate is to investigate whether ChronoSync, CCC and others use sparsebundle for NAS backup/sync. They don't seem to have the same issues that Time Machine has with NAS.

Hardware: iMac Core i7, 2.8 GHz, running 10.7.5; 16 gig of ram, using TM to back up to Time Capsule (late 2009)

I too have this problem - it started about 3 months ago. About every 3 weeks, I would get that message. After reading this thread, I decided to try Apple support. After two months, being bumped to a higher level support, I was told to delete:

    -Carbonite;

    -Parallels; and

-dyndns (a static provider I need).

There was no guarantee that any of these were actually the problem, but I was told to start with this, and see what happened. I don't mind disabling Carbonite, but I can not delete Parallels because I need that to run my business. So, my case was closed.

What I am not clear on is whether a new TC might solve this issue? Support felt it was a software, not hardware problem. But their solution is not possible, so I am - maybe just wishful thinking - wondering whether anyone has had luck with a new TC?

    Thanks.

Yep. I got a new time capsule and the problem went away. I say try it: you get two weeks to return it and a year warranty.

For me the above steps solved the issue. I realized that the problem was the sparse bundle file corruption because TM was backing up while my NAS was optimizing the raid array. So now I just dont back up If I run raid scrubbing.

To be honest I don't think dyndns or Carbonite or Parallels has to do anything with this issue.

The issue seems to be that the bundle file that is located on your Time Capsule or NAS somewhere on the network gets corrupted or modified while you're backing up. In my case it was data scrubbing in my Synology NAS. Does TC has any settings to uptimize the storage? Does this happen at any particular time of day? if so maybe something is happening at that time and you can always diable time machine not to do backups at that time. Use http://timesoftware.free.fr/timemachineeditor/ for that.

m3ki - Thanks for the response. I have a pretty simple set up. The only other backup I use is SuperDuper, that I use manually, about every 7 days or so. I have a Lacie external drive that I connect, then run SuperDuper. Once that is done, I close SD, and eject the Lacie drive.

I read your previous posts re: the time of day, and do not see any consistency on that front. I have no idea what "data scrubbing" is - sorry. I don't know if TC has any settings re: optomizing storage. All I did (in 2009) was plug it in and it worked fine. If I did something on the settings end, I forget what it was.

I agree with you - I don't think any of those programs are the cause of this problem. I explained to Apple support that deleting Parallels was like telling me to delete OS 10.7.5 to see if that would help.

jazzo49 - what was the year of the TC you replaced? Mine is late 2009.

Did you try upgrading firmware on those TC? Is that possible to do?

I did all firmware and software upgrades. Ultimately, the only thing that made a difference was a new TC. FWIW, the guy at the Apple store said four years is about the expected life span of a TC. They don't last forever.

How do I check the TC firmware? Tried "Get Info" but it's not there.

I went to Applications; Utilities; AirPort Utility. Then I clicked on the TC and a little window opens up showing the version and connected devices.

Hmm... maybe it's the hard drive that's dying or about to die....

... in that case the solution is either to replace the hard drive yourself or get a new TC....

Worked!  Hard to believe.  One difference: Instead of

      The Volume was repaired successfullyk

    .. I got:

The volume Time Machine Backups appears to be OK

    Definitely a great stunt.
