Q: question about textedit

I composed an email on "gmail", and hit send.  Then logged out.  As that was happening my downloads window appears  w/ a doc symbol and the title of mail.

What? 

I opened it up and a blank document appears w/ the title mail.  It was a text edit doc??

What?  How?  Why? ???
