I'm having a strange problem where I could be working in another program and suddenly, without any input on my part I hear mail send an email and then check all my accounts. When I look in the Sent mail folder I see nothing unusual. I'm certain I have no drafts and I have no mail rules setup. Any ideas? It sounds like a virus or malware to me but how do I find out?

Someone has probably hacked your email account, simply try changing your account password for mail and see if it stops.
Thanks for the idea to change my password. I did so, yet I can't understand the action by which someone getting an email password could result in an email being sent from my computer while I'm sitting at it? It doesn't make sense... If someone has my password they can get/send email from their computer but it woulnd't make a sent mail sound on mine... so there must be something else going on here. BTW, this is the second or third time this has happened in the past week.

Well, so far nothing strange has happened but it's only been about an hour. I'm wondering how I can check for a virus/malware without buying a program to do it?
Same thing happening here. Mail pops up and I get the "whoosh" of mail heading out. Nothing shows up in Sent folder.
Do I need to change password on ALL accounts I have set up?

That's correct, your account has not been hacked, not on your local machine and if it had been hacked online the mail would not be sent from the local machine, do you use iCal and use invitations?
Confused... bear with me as I'm having same issues... I have three accounts set up. do I need to change passwords on all three?
Dumb question: where do I change the password for the mail app? Am I chaging my Apple ID password?

As I said before in this thread (to Varen), I do not think that you were hacked unless someone has physicall access to your Mac, if your account was hacked online (much more likely) there would be no 'send' from your local machine. As I asked Varen "do you use iCal and use invitations?

Answer to your question = yes, defnitely use iCal and import events into it.
