is there a media player that will play ASX and WMV files?

got some short films (shot on a cell!:) from indie website, but my windows media player 9 won't play either asx (says 'windows media audio/video playlist' under kind) or wmv (windows media audio/video).
i have heard of websites that have free mac software, maybe they'd have an alternative media player....any pointers? thank you very much for your time

From a Microsoft Bulletin concerning asx files:

Cannot play back file. The file format is invalid.

In some cases, you might be able to play the file in Microsoft Windows Media Player on a Microsoft Windows-based computer, but not on a Macintosh. This occurs because Windows Media Player for Mac is parses .asx files more strictly.

This issue may occur if the .asx file contains an error, or if there is an error in the HTML coding of a Web page that contains an embedded Windows Media file.

To resolve this issue, test to determine if Window Media Player can play other .asx files. If it can, contact the owner of the Web site to have the owner troubleshoot the .asx file.

I do not know what, if any, Flip4Mac's redirecting to Quicktime would have in these cases. There have been asx files I have listened to with no problems.

I subscribe to a UK based service that streams live British television channels in asx format. I have no problem viewing these on Windows Media Player on both my home and office PC's, but try to watch them on my Mac Powerbook? Forget it.

Frankly, I'm surprized that more isn't made of this deficiency in the Mac version of WMP. Why do so many Mac users ("fanatics") remain in denial at what they are missing out there in the "real world?"

Back to the point, however, does anyone know of any way a Mac can support live streaming of asx files?

Thanks!

Hi Michael,

try downloading the Flip4Mac plugin for QT, ASX files will then play in QT on your Powerbook.

And as far as missing out in the real world is concerned, I most certainly don't mind missing out on having hundreds of virus warnings everytime I open my emails. You're right, there are things a Mac can't do and a PC can, but there are many more things in my opinion a Mac can do that a PC can't. And a Mac is more fun to work with.....;-)

Hope the Flip4Mac works for your problem!

Cheers,
Colin
