Redirect adding FWD and From is my address

I thought redirect was supposed to redirect the email and maintain the appearance of coming from the original sender (unless you inspect the headers). I am forwarding email to a gmail account and all the emails come in with an FWD appended to the subject line and my name in the from line. Is this correct? If so, what is the difference between redirect and forward?
