Today my wife's macbook pro (4 yrs old, OS X 10.5.8) freezed an she restarted it. When it came backed up, a screen with green vertical lines came up saying that the computer needed to be restarted. We did, and after a weird noise, it shutted down and came back up, showing the same screen. Any ideas on how to fix this?

I'm pretty sure it's serious, have you blown the Dust out Lately?
The noise may be Had Drive problem, hold Option or alt key at bootup, does anything show as a boot choice?
I am holding option down during strart up but just "thinks" for a while and bring me to the same page with the green line and the message saying to restart...
Unless you have possibly Firmware password protection in Mac OS X set...

It would block usage of all the startup keys, like C, N, T, D, CMD+s, CMD+Option+p+r, CMD +v, Option, and Shift, as well as booting from anything but the Hard Drive.
You'll likely have to take it in for diagnosis. 😟
I took the computer for diagnosis and the tech told me that it's the video card. The problem is that the video card is attached to the motherboard, thus it has to be replaced entirely... about $1000... :-(
I was afraid of that, sorry to hear though. 😟
