AT&T Unlock Policy (for used iPhone purchase - rejected)

I wanted to gather thoughts on this. I recently purchased a used iPhone 4 on craigslist after my original was lost (but later recovered). I did not want to enter a new binding agreement with AT&T. Anyway, I just got news about AT&T offering to unlock iPhones that met certain requirements. I called them up and met the requirements, so they fwd me to a tech support person who confirmed that my iPhone will be unlocked after I do a backup and restore. So, I do the back and restore and the phone remains locked. I find out that it has to be done on my original iPhone after chatting with AT&T a second time. I have to get the original owner of this new iPhone to put in the unlock request.

Hear are my questions...

1.) Has anyone been able to get their non-original (used purchase) iphone unlocked?

2.) AT&T needs to seriously make exceptions for these type of cases...don't you think?

3.) Should I escalate my request...or what advice does anyone have?

Thanks! Frank

It is probably good to clearly explain what happened to me, so that future iphone 4 buyers can request the seller of an iPhone to try and "factory unlock" their phones before selling them...if the buyer so-wishes to have an unlocked iphone. I was not aware of the unlock policy during my purchase and everyone needs to understand that AT&T is binding phones with "original users" - not actual owners. I will now reach out to the owner of my orignal iPhone and see if we can swap (the dings around the case don't seem that bad now).

I understand that AT&T is actually providing good service, since their is no law that requires the carrier to unlock phones.

Contrary to what wjosten said, yes AT&T will unlock a used iphone regardless of whether you're a customer. I know, because two months ago I purchased my 32 gb AT&T iPhone 4 off Craigslist, and submitted a request myself and had it unlocked. It would have been easier if sellers would do that before they sell their phones, but as in my case he didn't take the time to do it. The only provision is that it is out of contract. Before you do anything, write up a receipt with all the pertinent info; name of seller, product description, where you purchased it from (Craigslist) serial number, IMEI number, price etc. etc. Then email it to the seller and have them confirm the sale. Once you have the receipt in hand, go to the following:

https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/client/en_US/termsAndCondition

At the top of the page, right hand side, click on 'Non-Customer'. Enter the requested data. If I remember correctly, the phone number is the seller's number, or former number. Then enter your name, email address, etc. You'll receive an email from AT&T telling you to submit a fax of the sales receipt within 48 hours. The process can take up to 7 business days.

Hope this helps.

Really? Then why don't you get HU191's AT&T locked iPhone unlocked for him/her, since AT&T keeps denying their request.

And the original poster's phone as well, since AT&T keeps denying their request. In fact, why don't you search this forum, we just had another poster, today, that AT&T has denied a request to unlock, twice, for the same reasons.

Why don't you just sign up for a post-paid plan...month-to-month...no contact...then request the unlock yourself?

Also

Any existing AT&T account holder can approach them on your behalf. AT&T unlocks five iPhones per account.
