Mail will not quit normaly only force quit works. Any help?

I am in the same boat: 9 times out of ten, since upgrading to Mountain Lion Mail will not quit and requires a force quit.
I had the same problem and it was driving me crazy. I rebuilt the mail database and now it quits properly. Hopefully it will work for you.
How do I rebuild the database?
Under the Mailbox drop down it is the last option. Just select a mailbox first before going to the Mailbox menu.
I tried that but the desktop slowed down so much that hot corners wouldnt work, all FN keys delayed for about 15 sec. for each press, and typing slowed (This reply took 3 min. to finish). Mail still didn't quit so any other sugestions?
After upgrading to Mountain Lion the mail app will not quit and then freezes only a force quit will work. How do i quit it normaly?
