If so, it's likely a good indication of a hardware issue. As to what exactly is damaged/faulty is hard to say for sure. You can bring it to your local Apple Store/Genius Bar to have them take a look at it and verify whether or not the iPod is indeed dead and in need or repair or replacement.
A third party repair service will be less expensive, but not always guaranteed.
