you're better off selling it privately since the recycle program will give you much less than what your macbook is worth.

Apple doesn't purchase used anything. As Bimmer has provided, its a "Recycle" program, run by a third-party. If you want the least amount of money you'd likely get for your computer, use it. Otherwise, sell it yourself.
