why won't my ipad play .mov's

I have a first generation iPad and it won't sync .mov files. Is there a solution to this problem?

ipad does play .mov but they have to meet certain criteria.

straight from Apple:

Video formats supported: H.264 video up to 1080p, 30 frames per second, High Profile level 4.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format

Unfortunately, the 1st-gen iPad doesn't support synchronizing (via the Videos / Movies tab - not to be mistaken for iTunes File Sharing spoken of below!) 1080p videos to it via iTunes. (Unfortunately, the official description Johnathan Burger has cited doesn't mention this).

You WILL want to get a third-party media player instead of re-encoding your video to 720p (or below) as they all support iTunes File Sharing ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4094 ), which doesn't have such a restriction (read: you can transfer 1080p videos with it, unlike with the standard iTunes Movie synchronization). Get one (or all) of the following media players if you don't mind purchasing commercial apps and just transfer your video files to their Document folders via iTunes File Sharing:

GoodPlayer

It's Playing (review & tips: http://www.iphonelife.com/blog/87/selecting-best-dvd-player-app-its-playing-bugf ix )

AVPlayerHD

If you want something free, go for either of the following two apps:

MoliPlayer (review: http://www.iphonelife.com/blog/87/free-multimedia-player-moliplayer-ipad-fixed-a nd-enhanced-now-its-recommended )

FlexPlayer (review: http://www.iphonelife.com/blog/87/new-version-free-multimedia-player-flexplayer- out-%E2%80%93-now-its-more-or-less-recommended )

Again: do NOT use Handbrake or other tools for resizing / reconverting your videos! In most cases, it's absolutely unnecessary!
