Aug 17, 2012 11:46 AM in response to Xboxrrodby EZ Jim,My old (Apple has not offered new external iSights for several years) external Firewire iSight's microphones works perfectly on my Mountain Lion Macs.
I tested with both Photo Booth & QuickTime video recordings. No problem in either app or either Mac.
Check your iSight's connecting cable or FW400-800 adapter. Also check application and System Preferences... > Sound > Input configuration and volume settings.
If the problem continues, repair your boot drive using Mountain Lion recovery. If iSight's mic still does not work, contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service on your external iSight.
BTW. you might find a separate USB mic like this one or a new, compatible, USB external webcam with its own mic a simpler or lower cost alternative. Several compatible webcams are discussed in http://www.mac-compatible-web-cam.com

Did you migrate and prefs or other files to get Mountain Lion to recognize the microphone when using an external iSight camera?
I have just installed a fresh copy of Mountain Lion and I get nothing in regards to the system seeing the iSight as an input device.
My iSight works flawlessly on Snow Leopard.
Any additional information is appreciated.

Did you try the rest of EZ's solution?

No. I merely upgraded the OSs on my Snow Leopard Macs (Mac Pro and two MBPs) to Lion when OS X 10.7 was released. When OS X 10.8 was released, I upgraded again. I didn't migrate anything for either upgrade. External iSights worked properly in all three OS X versions.

Whenever I upgrade (i.e., 10.6 to 10.7, 10.8, etc.) Mac OS X, I always restart the Mac and repair permissions before I begin the upgrade. I repair permissions again immediately following the system restart that completes the upgrade.
Whenever I update (i.e., 10.8.1 to 10.8.2, etc.) Mac OS X, I always restart the Mac and repair permissions before I begin the update process. I only download and install the Combo update version. I repair permissions again immediately following the system restart that completes the Combo update.
(1) If you did not use this method, you can try installing the latest Combo (currently http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1581) using the method that works for me. If your trouble persists, try using my upgrade method to reinstall Mountain Lion.
