Slow MacBook Pro. WAY too slow.

Hello everybody,

I'm getting quite tired of trying to understand why my Mac runs slow by myself, so I'm here to get ideas to solve my problem.

So, my MacBook Pro is slow.

I took some times to be specific:

- startup: it takes around 64 seconds (let's say around a minute) to boot up. I mean, from the moment I press the power button, to the moment I can type my password. [average of 3 consecutive reboots]

- startup: moreover, it takes 28 seconds after I finish typing my password to show the dock (and a few more seconds to be able to launch any app)

- Mail: on a fresh reboot, around 35 seconds to be able to open mail and open the "New message" window

- Safari/Chrome: on a fresh reboot, around 15 seconds to be able to type in the address/search bar

As an amateur photographer, I also make use of Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop CS6, and that kind of application takes AGES to open.

I'm quite a fast user, and tend to do a lot of things at the same time. But I can clearly remember I had no such problems a-year-or-something ago.

Besides this, I'm quite a diligent user: I regularly clean up space and empty the trash, I delete unused applications, I regularly quit (Cmd+Q) applications when I finish using them or when I need a lot of RAM (Photoshop).. I also do the disk utility tricks and restart quite often.

Can you suggest something to speed things up?

At this point, I can't find better explanations than natural hardware obsolescence.

Tech details:

- My MacBook's CPU is a 2,26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.

- I have a 160 GB system hard drive with 30 GB free.

- I upgraded my RAM to 4 GB after noticing the system slowing down with Lion.

- I installed a second 250 GB hard disk in place of the CD/DVD drive, using a caddy I found on Amazon

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2009), OS X Mountain Lion, 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 RAM

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.

If you have an optical drive, make sure there is no disc in it.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.

Step 1

Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.

Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Post the messages logged during the time something abnormal was happening. That time might be before or after the boot.

For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes after the boot time, not before. If the problem is a system hang or shutdown failure, post the messages from before the boot time, when the system was hanging or was failing to shut down. In either case, please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning or the end of the log extract.

Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.

Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.

Step 2

Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Pleasedon’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

Dear Linc,

Thank you very much for your reply.

My problem is quite a diffused one. I mean, each startup is slow, and generally the computer as a whole is slow..

However, thanks for pointing out the presence of the console tool, which is something I never used before.

I will now post data relative to the 1st and longest reboot I did to check how long it was actually taking (was 1'18").

Then I shut down the computer again.

Step 2

I didn't find any crash or panic log. Just some previous application hang logs.

Thanks.

Aug 17, 2012 12:11 AM in response to Linc Davis

I repaired the permissions and rebooted, but I didn't notice any improvement in boot speed nor in general system speed.

Now I booted in safe mode. It took 3'40" to boot up, and 55" to login, as expected.

Linc Davis wrote:

Exactly. What should happen?

I can't notice any speed improvement in safe mode, mostly because the graphic acceleration looks disabled (and every time I press Cmd+T in Safari it takes ages to render the Top Sites page).

Could you tell me a bit more?

Not what you want to hear, but I don't think those times are not out of the ordinary. I get somewhat similar times on a 2.4 MBP. Once photoshop is open does it function normally' part of your problem is that your didk is too filled up. Things start to bog when the HD gets close to full. You may want to look into a larger HD or move about 60 GBs of stuff to an external drive. Good luck.

PS works normally once it's open (but in the first few minutes I keep seeing The Spinning Beach Ball of Death every time I click on something).

I know this times are not extraordinary out of the normal. I'm looking for optimization tricks to remove unnecessary things all-around the system.

On a PC at this point I would simply format and re-install Windows, and enjoy the speed of the fresh system.

Anyway, I moved on the 2nd HD my main photo library from Lightroom, freeing up 25 GB more.

Now I have 53 out of 114 GB free in my startup partition (I forgot to mention I also have a 45 GB BootCamp partition).

Check your Login Items in Accounts and get rid of or disable all you do not need. This will speed up your boot time.

I already stick to the minimum..

I want to find a way to remove all the useless files I don't know about that slow me down.. I know they are around.. somewhere..

I didn't look in detail at your log, but I have a question.

How are your permisions at /

You can check that in the terminal.

Open the Terminal app from Utilities folder and type

ls -lsad /

Can you post the result?

Sure:

FirstName-LastName:~ Username$ ls -lsad /
0 drwxr-xr-x 37 Username staff 1326 17 Ago 09:25 /

(I replaced the words FirstName, LastName and Username)

Aug 17, 2012 1:53 AM in response to MV1005

Supposed you have the right user (who is aloud to use the sudo command), do as next:

Open the terminal again, so far you closed the terminal and type, or copy and paste those 2 commands. After each command press ENTER

STEP 1

cd /

sudo chown root:admin /

The first command will place you in the root-directory, which is /

The second command will change the permissions for the root-directory.

On every UNIX-like systems the / must be owned by root.

STEP 2

After doing that, close all applications and reboot.

Post if reboot-speed is better.

Aug 17, 2012 2:15 AM in response to AmadeusBiteTheApple

Ok, I did this:

FirstName-LastName:~ Username$ cd /
FirstName-LastName:/ Username$ sudo chown root:admin /
Password:
FirstName-LastName:/ Username$ ls -lsad /
0 drwxr-xr-x 37 root admin 1326 17 Ago 09:25 /

Then rebooted.

The system boot was actually faster, it took around 47 seconds. Thanks.

Why isn't this the default setting? Could it have negative side-effects?

I don't think I ever had to type the administrator password to edit files in the root folder, so I suppose the owner has always been me (the only user I ever created on my MacBook).

Any other suggestion?

Aug 17, 2012 2:38 AM in response to MV1005

Yes, this should be normal that root always own the / directory.

I think also that nobody change that deliberately. But I think this can happen by unpacking some archives. TAR or TGZ archives. Some of the archives are packed with paths including / , which shouldn't happen.

Or by installing some software, where the installer includes /

This is a bad behavior.

Other reason can be having some malware installed. Viruses don't have a easy life under UNIX-systems, but there are some ways to install them. One very effective ways is installing a software, which also include for example a cronjob. A cronjob can be initiated by a awk-script which at several miuntes/hours install/override some configurations in the background. The user don't see that.

While the script override some configurations regulary, the path can be included, so the script override the ownership. Notable tricky is that installing the software the first time, the software ask you for your password (which is sudo) and require by this way the acces for your whole disk. The software install the software in your /Application folder and in the same time it will install a cronjob with root permissions, which regulary override something in your system. Even if you face one day something curious and repair the configuration, the cronjob still override the configuration.

The solution is to delete the cronjob and the first step is to find out if you have a such cronjob.

You can check that by typing in the terminal the command

crontab -l

To check if root have a cronjob, type

sudo crontab -l

But this is just one of numerous possibilities. ClamXav normally filter those scripts out. I would install ClamXav and would check the whole disk.

Aug 17, 2012 3:30 AM in response to MV1005

Regarding to your log, I have some further questions.

  1. Do you use proxies? If yes, try to boot without proxies.
  2. Did you specify some mounts at boot? If yes, disable those mounts.
  3. When booting are there any USB-devices connected? If yes disconnect all USB devices.
  4. Do you use any third party-filesystem-software (like mounting NTFS, REISER or EXT3 filesystems? If yes, we should see how to optimize that. So far I can see that in the log you use tuxera for NTFS. Normally your MAC OS could also do that. I'm always very carefuly using third party software regarding the handling of filesystems. It may work and a lot of software do the job, but not always very clean. The filesystem is the infrastructure of your system, the highway so to speek. Overloading the highway with MAC OS services and third party tools, can decrease the perfomance, you face a jam. Those tools are developed at a certain status of the OS. Apple doesn't care about everey vendor who offer his tools and they will not respect those tools. That means always installing an update from Apple (who maybe change something at the services who use and handle the filesystem) you can face several problems.
  5. Something on you boot-camp seems to me not correct. I never use boot camp, but the last lines also cost you 6 seconds.

Aug 17, 2012 4:57 AM in response to AmadeusBiteTheApple

Looks like I have no cronjobs:

FirstName-LastName:~ Username$ crontab -l
crontab: no crontab for Username
FirstName-LastName:~ Username$ sudo crontab -l
Password:
crontab: no crontab for root
FirstName-LastName:~ Username$

I'm not usually the kind of user that gets infected by malwares but – just in case – I downloaded, installed and executed ClamXav. It is now scanning my disk, I will report anything found.

Regarding your second post, I will answer to your questions one by one.

  1. No, I don't use proxies. I have one set up but it is usually disabled.
  2. After a boot, my computer mounts the BOOTCAMP partition (which is on the statup partition's disk) and the second disk (which has only one partition) I installed in place of the DVD drive. How do I disable those automatic mounts?
  3. No.
  4. Yes, I use Tuxera NTFS. I need it to write on NTFS disks. Unless Apple changed something, by itself OS X can only read NTFS partitions.
Do you have any better suggestions on how to write on NTFS disks? I would like to reduce third-party softwares, but I need (and, well, want) to use Windows-compatible external drives, so the easiest way is to use NTFS file systems (I think).
  5. I also want to remove the Windows 7 installation on boot-camp. Anyway, I needed Windows 7 on my Mac, and I preferred boot-camp to other solutions exactly because it's integrated with the system and does not use any third-party software.

Slow MacBook Pro. WAY too slow.
