Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Media with Airport Extreme version 7.6.1

I am trying to use my hard drive as a cloud storage and I cannot see it in my finder when it is connected to my airport extreme. Does anyone know how to do this?

Yes, you should be able to reformat the drive. First connect it directly to your Mac, and then, you will be using the Disk Utility to format it.

Since a picture is worth a thousand (or is that ten thousand) words, please take a look at the following iClarified article to guide you in formatting your drive. It shows formatting with Mac OS Extended (Journaled), and that is exactly what you want for yours.

I'm having a very similar problem with a Seagate external drive and Airport Extreme. I was able to set up the base station and view the disk after reformatting, and connected once from both the machines on the network. But then suddenly I am not able to see the disk on either machine, and when I try to connect to the server (base station) it gives me an error message saying the server doesn't exist.

To complicate that, the system is still working to provide all the machines on the network an internet connection.

I tried resetting and powering off and on the base station, with no effect.

Any suggestions?

Hi Tesserax,

Thanks for the reply.

As you suggested, I tried connecting my drive directly to the Macbook port. At first it was not recognized, so I powered off the drive and reconnected and the Mac connected properly. I repeated that procedure to try to connect it to the Base Station, but that didn't work.

I then ran Verify Disk and Repair Disk and received the message that nothing appears to be wrong. However, the option for Repair Disk Permissions is grayed out, so I couldn't try that.

If it gives you any more clues, I tried plugging a small (unpowered) 1 GB thumb drive into the same Base Station port I'm trying to use for the Seagate, and the machine recognized it immediately and started showing the server connection.
