error when installing applesoftwareupdate.msi

I recently got a new computer (windows 7 x64) and went to download itunes onto it. Everytime I do I get an error saying "There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor."

I extracted the files and i am able to individually install bonjour, mobile device support, and application support. I cannot install the itunes.msi or the applesoftwareupdate. I get the same error message when I try to do so.

Ive looked around and saw that the main solution seems to be to "repair" the file in the add or remove programs folder. However, I cannot do that because I am unable to install the apple software file, so applesoftwareupdate is not in the add or remove programs folder. I have tried removing all apple related files, using both "fix it" and Revo, and restarting the download. I still get the same error message.

From looking around on this site, I found out about the windows installer cleanup. When i run that, there is nothing about applesoftwareupdate in the list of programs.

I am completly at a loss here. Any help would be amazing and appreciated.

spent a lot of time trying to figure out exactly the same problem without success. with the reply here i figured out exactly what to do

1. go to your control panel and delete all apple related software

2. download latest iTunes for windows from apple website

3. find the download file in your download folder, right click and run as administrator

4. download iCloud for windows and similarly run as administrator

5. done

i actually figured it out, well kinda. Ill write what i did here incase someone else with this problem stumbles on to this. I extracted the itunes64setup folder onto my desktop. I then deleted the applesoftwareupdate.msi from that folder. Then through the command prompt go to C:\Users\"user name"\Desktop\Itunes64setup\itunes64.msi\ passive. This does a custom install using the files still in the extracted folder. Since there is no applesoftwareupdate in this folder, it does not get installed. So i assume there will be no notifications for when an update is available. You can always repeat these steps for when there is an update.

took me like 3 weeks to figure this out. hope this helps someone.

cheers
