I recently moved and lost the remote that I use to control my apple tv. I want to use it, but am not sure how to control the device. Can I just buy a new remote and that be the end of it?

Yes you can purchase a new remote from either a bricks and motar or online Apple Store. The remotes are universal so will always work with your Apple TV.
