Unable to start in safe mode in iMac

You do it as here:

Startup, immediately at the startup chime hold the Shift Key, once the grey Apple Logo and the progress bar is visible you can release the Shift key.

Note that starting in Safe Mode can take considerable time.

If it does not work:

do a PRAM reset, at best twice.

Then restart into Safe Mode.
