i have the newest macbook pro (summer 2012) and am trying to use the headphone port as a audio input port. I have seen how it is done on older mac pros by switching the output to an inout via system prefrences but that technique doesn't seem to work on this one. Is there any way to convert it to a input?

Are you sure you have seen this done? I have never seen someone be able to do that as uaully the wiring is related to input direction. Trying to input via 1/8 is sad anyway.. get a proper sound card 🙂 and link in via firewire or usb
On the 13" the port is output only. Sorry...

In Sound Preferences you should have the option to switch the audio port between input and output on the 13" MBP as it does dual-duty. Look for 'Use audio port for' near the bottom of the dialog:
I just recently switched from a macbook pro that had the ability described above. This new one which is much more powerful:
Processor: 2.7 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory: 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Software OS X 10.8.3
Graphics NIVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB
as you can see lacks that option, and is no longer avalable.

No, the audio in was dropped from late 2011 models onwards. Use a USB audio interface, or a different model Mac (15" models retain the audio in)
