is the ethernet dongle the same for mbp w/ retina
the local retail store told me there was a new dongle out for the mbp retina... can i use one for an older mbp?

Does the old MBP have a Thunderbolt port? I don't honestly know the answer to your question, but I know that you'd have to have a Thunderbolt port. All MBPs that I know of shipped with an Ethernet port...
