Gamma Setting for Apple Cinema Display (Aluminium)

I have a 23" Cinema Display, and wondered if gamma 2.2 is the correct display setting for general use with Final Cut. I realise that only a calibrated external monitor will guarantee correct results, but is 2.2 the better setting than 1.8 for a general approximation when editing the rough cut?
