Q: How to print with OS 10.8 and Canon LBP 3010?

I have installed OS X Mountain Lion on my MacBook 13 inches that I bought in 2008. I can't print anymore with my Canon LBP 3010 printer. Can anyone help me?

Canon has released the CAPT v3.55 driver for 10.8. You should be able to install this latest driver over the top of the previous driver you would have currently installed on the Mac. And before installing this driver, remove the LBP3010 from Print & Scan if it exists.

I have PARTIALY the same problem - part of the problem ( how to print when printer is connected to OS 10.8 by USB) has been resolved with CAPT v3.55.

Another part of the problem - how to print from SECOND remote OS 10.8 which wants to use "shared printer" ( connected by USB to the FIRST 10.8).

In meanwhile the is no problem if you want to print from SECOND remote OS 10.6.8 which wants to use shared printer ( connected by USB to the FIRST 10.8).

    In other words:

    - second remote 10.6.8 prints well through 10.8 with USB-connected,

    - second remote 10.8 does not print through 10.8 with USB-connected.

Looks like PARTIALLY problem is at MAC's side...

I've tried various times to install CAPT v3.55 driver for 10.8 on my Air and I can't print at all. I have to reboot in 10.7 (on another partition) and print from there. Am I the only one?

The print queue could be the issue. So that I can check if it has been created correctly, open System Information, select Printers in the left column and then select the LBP in the right column. Of importance is the print queue URI. Can you copy and paste back here what you have for the 10.8 partition.

Thanks for that. I believe the queue is wrong. But I don't have a CAPT device here at home to be absolutely sure so I'm basing my answer on the Canon UFR2 driver, which has a similar setup to the CAPT driver.

So, if you could try this.

First remove the current printer in Print & Scan.

Then open Finder and navigate to /Library/Printers/Canon/CUPSCAPT. Here there could be a Utilities folder and inside of this folder a Backgrounder utility. If this is so, double click it. Nothing will visibly happen. It starts this service in the background.

Now, open Print & Scan and add the printer again. I believe this will create the queue correctly, in that instead of the URI starting with "usb://Canon..." it should show "cndbmz://Canon..." (or something similar). If it does, then it should be ready to print.

First of all I must say I really appriciate you trying to me.

There is an application named Canon CAPT BackGrounder and when I open it I get a dialog saying that the application can not be opened. The URL doesn't change and the printer doesn't print.

The strange thing is that when I try to open the StatusMonitor I get:

    There are no registered printers.

Add a printer and then restart the Statusmonitor.

The Statusmonitor will now be terminated.

Which means that adding a printer doesn't register somewhere...

With the Backgrounder failing to open then the queue will not be created correctly. And this in turn will stop the Statusmonitor from working.

So how to get the Backgrounder running is the task ahead. I need to do some testing back in the office tomorrow. In the meantime, if you refer to the Guide included with the CAPT driver, then is information about how to uninstall the driver from the Mac. If you can follow those steps and then reinstall the v3.55 driver, hopefully that gets the Backgrounder running and lets the printer create correctly.

And for your reference, I found some of my documentation about the queue URI. It should be:

    cnbma://localhost:59687

Unfortunately none of the above worked. I wait to hear tomorrow whether anything else occurs to you.

    Thanks, Amiram.

Okay, have done some testing this morning to an LBP6300 that uses the CAPT driver.

First of all, I can get the queue to show the same as you have by stopping the CAPT Backgrounder service. This was achieved by deleting the "CUPSCAPT.BG.plist" file in HD > Library > LaunchAgents and then restarting the Mac. After logging in, I opened Activity Monitor to check that the CAPT Backgrounder was not listed, which is wasn't. I then opened Print & Scan and added the LBP6300 connected via USB to the Mac. The queue URI then looked like this, which is similar to what you have.

    usb://Canon/LBP6300?serial=001E8F2968D0

When I then tried to print the job would just sit in the queue. And if I opened the CAPT Utility, I would get this message about the Statusmonitor.

    Statusmonitor Error When Opened.png

So I then deleted the printer and manually started the CAPT Backgrounder, by double-clicking on the file "Canon CAPT Backgrounder", which is located in HD > Library > Printers > Canon > CUPSCAPT > Backgrounder. I then opened Activity Monitor to check that the CAPT Backgrounder was listed, which it was. Note that if the Backgrounder service is already running, you will get this error message when you double-click on the "Canon CAPT Backgrounder" file.

    Backgrounder Error.png

    So with the Backgrounder running, I then opened Print & Scan and added the printer. I then checked System Information and the queue URI was now showing;

    cnbma://localhost:59687

With the queue now configured correctly, I was able to print to the LBP.

So, for you, please open Activity Monitor to check if the CAPT Backgrounder service is listed. If it is not shown, then navigate to HD > Library > Printers > Canon > CUPSCAPT > Backgrounder and double-click the "Canon CAPT Backgrounder" file. Does this make the service appear in Activity Monitor or do you get an error message like above?

If the CAPT Backgrounder now appears in Activity Monitor, remove the current LBP printer in Print & Scan and add it again. Then check System Information to see if the queue has been created correctly. If it has created as shown above, then see if you can print. If it still shows usb instead of cnbma, then let me know.

No luck I'm afraid... I tried it all and it's still usb://Canon/LBP6300?serial=001E8F2968D0 and no printing. Cheers, Amiram.
