Q: How to extend a wireless network of an AirPort Express (1st generation)

Hi, I actually own an AirPort Express (1st generation) which is configured to create a wireless network (the AE is connected via ethernet cable to my router which in turns provides the Internet connection).

My idea is to buy a second AE (always 1st generation) to extend the network wireless, following the official Apple guide at (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4259?viewlocale=en_US) it tells in point 8. of the section Configuring the primary Wi-Fi base station: Select the “Allow this network to be extended” checkbox.

Unfortunately I don't find that checkbox in my Utility AirPort which is the 6.1 (610.31) version, the firmware of my AE is the 7.6.

I attach the info of my AE:AE.PNG

and the menu where I don't find the checkbox: Wireless.PNG

What am I doing wrong ?

Thanks, regards, Roberto.

The Apple instructions that you reference were published before Lion or Mounatin Lion appeared.

AirPort Utility 6.1 will configure things for you automatically if you allow it to configure the second AirPort Express to "extend a wireless network".

You only need to manually enter the check mark if you are using an earlier version of AirPort Utility.

So, do you mean that have I to configure the second AE as "extend a wireless network" ? Is this enough ?

This all you need to do in AirPort Utility 6.1. It will literally do it for you automatically if you reset the Express back to factory default settings and then open AirPort Utility 6.1.

Click on "Other AirPort Base Stations (1) in the upper left hand corner to start the process.

Good, should I do a reset of the AE for the new one or also the actual one ? Both ?

Only the new Express needs to be reset to default settings. Hold down the reset button for 9-10 seconds and that will do it.

Hi, 'm just finalizing the transaction about my new second Apple AirPort Express (1st generation), on the other side a new question came up to me.

Actually in my house I've a wireless network created by the AirPort Express with name "Sala" and other settings like channel, security, etc.; in my basement room I've a second wireless network been created by a DLAN appliance (Devolo manufacturer) with name "Taverna" (it's connected with my upstairs router with ethernet cable, the same applies to my upstairs AirPort Express) and other settings like channel, security, etc.

Reading the official Apple guide at (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4260) about "

Wi-Fi base stations: Setting up and configuring a roaming network (802.11 a/b/g/n)

" I'm just wondering if the same rules could be applied also to my wireless network configuration letting me to have one only wireless network with an unique name and settings....

    Is this possible ?

    Thanks, regards.

    Roberto.
