I just turned on my ipod nano second generation to use if for the first time. I had it in storage for a few years. I plugged it into my windows xp laptop and not i'm getting a message saying do not disconnect. what does this mean

Does the iPod still charge while its plugged in your Windows XP machine? Are you running the latest version of iTunes?
What happens if you plug the iPod directly into a USB port on the back of the PC?
Maybe tried resetting it while it's still connected to the PC. To do this, press and hold both the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
