All my import files are green boxes

Got footage from client and when I import all my files they just show up as green boxes. No video image or sound. I opened up After Effects and it could play them just fine. This happen to anyone else?

Oh and I tried to check the background tasks but then my screen froze up for a second. Then turned blue and kicked out to the Mac log in screen like if I had chosen to log out. This has happend to me before on another project. Using disk utilities I cleaned up permissions and verified the disk. It did the trick but not this time. I still get all green boxes on this new project. Bizarre! 😕

Sorry...I didn't know you had asked this.

Well I got another project from the same guys and same issue. The videos are MPEG (MP4) files from a Sony camera (trying to get details on the exact camera). I do not have Perian installed. I do have Flip4Mac installed but the files will not play in QT. The error I get is posted above. They do open in both Premiere and After Effects. VLC is telling me the codec is MPEG-1/ 2 Video (mpgv).

Oops for got to mention in AE the files are MPEG 4 files. I don't know if there is a button that will give me more info about the video but this is what I am reading from the Project window in AE.

I'm sorry I thought you were working in After Effects. If you're not using AE what's it have to do with this? You were bringing the files into AE in the first message.

Sorry, can't help without real information. It soudns as oif the files are in some format that requires a folder structure that can't be read properly. Premiere probably could do it.

I bought FCPX and it doesn't work with any of the footage from a Sony cam?

This is just plain wrong. It works correctly if the material is in the correct form. If you have the folder structure the XDCAM media belongs in it can be imported into FCP. Because it sounds as if the media was provided to you stripped out of the folder structure then it cannot be imported using the camera import function. The raw media does not include the metadata information FCP needs for it. You can see this problem in other applications.

Not sure what you can do with it at this stage if you can't get the media in thr proper structure. Maybe someone else knows how to convert the media.

Okay good and bad news. The good is using the XDCAM Browser I could see all the footage and even export directly to Final Cut Pro X. There's a nifty button just for that.

Click on Softawre Downloads and then click on XDCAM Browser Software. Use this link:

The bad thing is that I have to do each video one by one! UGH!!! I'll keep digging around to see if there is a batch export I can do because I am not going to export each single video. That will take all day. I'll just log everything in Premiere. Even though I really don't like Premiere.

Sorry to burst your bubble Tom but I think you are confusing FCP and FCPX maybe? FCPX cannot read the files without using the Sony XDCAM Browser to export the video into a file that FCPX will read regardless of how you have the files structured. If you have it figured out please let me know your set up using FCPX and Sony XDCAM footage.

This is just wrong. FCPX can read XDCAM directly form the camera or from the folder structure.

Do a forum search for XF305, 300, 105, 100. I have used all of them to import directly in FCP without any additional conversion software.

Badunit gave excellent advise, but the thread pointed to is over a year old. There have been a lot of versions since then.
