You need to purchase and download the Intel-compatible version of Quicken2007. The original version is a PowerPC application, support for which was removed from Lion & Mountain Lion.

Is the download at this link a full program not requiring a previously installed Quicken2007? The webpage says that new users should get Quicken Essentials. I have a MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion.
Correct, it's basically a version of Quicken 2007 that runs on Intel machines.
Long run, you should get Quicken Essentials, or move to software other than Quicken 2007. It's old, and and outside of this update to run on Mountain Lion, it's dead.
Note that QE doesn't have 100% of the feature set of Q2K7. It doesn't have bill pay, it doesn't have check printing, it doesn't do investment history, etc. Though it works well for me for CC and checking and investment shapshots.
Mountain Lion supports the revised Quicken 2007. That was the question. Don't buy Quicken Essentials.
IF you had a previous version of Quicken 2007 installed, the update at the link previously posted will work. It was recommended to me that I install it before updating to ML 10.8, so I installed it on my SL 10.6.8 version before running the update. It worked for me. According to the Quicken support person I talked to, you would not be able to install the PowerPC version on the original disk and then apply the update.

"Quicken 2007 for Lion" which now is updated for Mountain Lion, is a full fledged rewrite of Quicken 2007 to run on the Intel CPUs that Macs have used since 2006. IT IS NOT AN UPDATE!
You do not need any version of Quicken previously installed on your computer for it to properly function.
It costs $15 and works directly with data from Quicken 2005, 2006 and 2007.
If you need to update data from previous versions, such as I did when upgrading from Quicken Deluxe 2002, you must obtain a copy of the PowerPC version of either Quicken 2006 or Quicken 2007 (post a request with Ferd at: http://thebestparts.net/2011/07/26/how-to-convert-an-older-quicken-data-file-to- use-on-mac-os-10-7-lion/), and FIRST run it on a computer capable of running a PPC application (that is a computer that has Rosetta installed) with your old data file.
After Quicken 2006/2007 PPC has updated your data, you can now access your data directly with Quicken 2007 for Lion in either Lion or Mountain Lion.
Quicken Essentials is severly hobbled, and virtually no one recommends its use on the Mac (except for those compensated by Intuit).
Sorry to be dumb, but I want to make sure I do this right. I have Quicken 2005. I didn't realize that it would not work with Mountain Lion. So... I should be able to purchase Quicken 2007 and download it and convert all my 2005 data into 2007 so it will work with Mountain Lion, is that correct? I won't have to do anything else like run it on a PPC machine?
Also you mentioned I could get it for $15? Could you post a link where I can purchase it? I looked on Intuit's website but couldn't find anywhere to purchase 2007. (EDITED: found the $15 version here: http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/42231/quicken-2007)

As per MichaelLAX stated above - it arrives as a .dmg file that contains a totally rewritten Quicken 2007 app.

Quicken 2007 (either version) will ONLY accept data from Quicken 2006 or 2007. For you, as a Quicken 2005 user, you must obtain a copy of the PowerPC version of Quicken 2006 or Quicken 2007 and that program will convert your Quicken 2005 data file to one that will open in Quicken 2007 for Lion.

Consequently, go to this blog and post a comment for Ferd to send you a copy of Quicken 2006 or Quicken 2007 (PPC) and when you receive it, you must run it on a Mac that supports Rosetta and PPC software:
Then when you upgrade to Mountain Lion, your data file will open normally with Quicken 2007 for Lion/Mountain Lion.
If you have already upgraded to Mountain Lion and hence do not have access to Rosetta, let me know and I will give you further instructions.
Ok so I went to the link that I posted when I found the $15 software and it says that you can import from Quicken2005. Also because I couldn't run Quicken2005 on my MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion I had copied over to my older iMac and was using Quicken there for about 2 days. Not sure if that made a difference or not, but today after I purchased and downloaded Quicken 2007 all I did was move the whole folder with 2005 in it to my MacBook and opened 2007. When it asked me where to get the files from I pointed it to the last back up in the 2005 folder. It opened it with no problems at all. Now that being said I do not use any of the other options with Quicken. I only do my checkbook, no reports, etc., etc.
Now I have to do the same thing for my husbands Quicken files. I think to avoid any problems, just in case running them on the older iMac was the difference, I am going to transfer the files to the iMac and open and add some transactions and then save and then move them to his computer with 2007 on it.
I read so many bad reviews about Quicken, but I have never had any problems with it and have been using it since 2000. I tried to use a couple of other programs but they were so hard to get used to. I like Quicken and am happy that I don't have to try to learn another program.

Thank you for the information about Quicken 2005 --> Quicken 2007! I stand corrected! My mistake for answering from memory and not double checking the information...
In my case, I was upgrading from Quicken Deluxe 2002 and so I definitely needed a copy of Quicken 2006 PPC or 2007 PPC to complete the conversion before using Quicken 2007 for Lion. I had forgotten that Quicken 2007 for Lion will also open Quicken 2005 files.

Also: I go back to Quicken 4 and Quicken 98 and I am no interested in learning a new program at this point, either! 🙂 I even purchased a copy of Quicken for the Apple // on 5.25" and 3.5" floppy disk on eBay, just to have it in my library...

Just spent the better part of the morning trying to figure out the various compatibility dilemmas after "upgrading" to Lion (Mt Lion still to come!) - and Intuit definitely is not trying to sell you Quicken 2007 - anywhere!
Glad I found this post, before shelling out $50 for the Mac Essentials version !
