The search functionality in the iTunes app store is useless if you want to find apps that will run on older iPhones or iPod Touch. Do a Google search instead. To find apps that will run on 3.1 use the following google search terms:
site:https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ "Requires iOS 3.1"
Be sure to type it in exactly as shown. I get about 270,000 results when I do the search. To narrow the results, you can add additional terms. For example, if you only want to see the apps that have the word game and algebra in the description search for:
site:https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ "Requires iOS 3.1" game algebra
This will narrow the results to about 68 items.
If you want to narrow it down to the free apps, it is more difficult because you can't just add the word 'free', because every page also has an advertisement for a 'free single'. So a work around is to remove the ones with certain prices using the following search term:
site:https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ "Requires iOS 3.1" game algebra -"$0.99" -"$1.99" -"$2.99" -"$4.99"
Once you have found the name of the app(s) you want, you can use the iTunes App Store to download and install it on your older iPhone or iPod Touch.
If you are curious about the google search terms that are used in this search, Google offers an online course in searching, that will teach you many advanced searching techniques. It is available at: http://www.google.com/insidesearch/landing/powersearching.html If you just want a list off additional search terms you can use, some of them can be found at: http://support.google.com/websearch/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=136861

Stevejobsfan0123, YOU ROCK! Your link is THE BEST I found on the internet. I just added my search term to the end of the google search term.
My old iPod 1st generation (IOS 3.1.3) had to be reset to factory settings as the computer it was synched to was broken and I needed to change the music on it. So I reset it to factory settings and then, because it was so old, could not get ANY of the app's which were on there already.
Your link saved my old iPod!
