does Mountain Lion run Final Cut Pro 6

Feeling pretty screwed over when upgrade to Lion killed my Final Cut Pro 6 Studio use - Does anyone know if Mountain Lion is compatible with FCP6?

Or should I go back to Snow Leopard.

Final Cut X isn't an option - it doesn't open my FCP6 project files. Who's idea was that? Thousands of hours of work suddenly "unsupported"

Somehow I don't think Steve would be happy about this...

If you want to stick with FCP6, I would go back to Snow Leopard.

I've not used it, but there is a utility for converting FCP7 (or 6) projects to Final Cut Pro X.

Actually, Steve was very much alive when all these changes were set in motion.

Hey mate,

I work for a TV Subtitling/Dubbing firm. We use Final Cut Pro 6 since 2008. Today I first checked the FCPX which is undoubtedly a stylish and fully advanced iMovie... So, I wonder what happened to the old Final Cut PROFESSIONAL edition. Very awkward, having to upgrade our 4 LOVELY MacPro to Mountain Lion, but hesitating due to Old FCP incompatibility.

Not everyone is a skateboard geek or an average family man on vacation. The iLife cult is fine, as long as Apple don't forget their most devoted supporters... The Pros!

I'm a prosumer making videos for my tri club using a Sony HVR-Z1. I had the same problem trying to install FCP 6 on a new Mac with Lion. There is a way to get Lion to run FCP 6.0. I think it involved using your Snow Leopard OS X disk to copy and install the Rosetta utility that enabled PPC apps to run on the Intel environment. User uploaded fileIf I remember correctly, the problem was due to the FCP install app not being compatible with Lion, rather than FCP Studio itself. I have FCP 6 and Lion working happily together (per the screenshot) and I can't see why won't work in Mountain Lion, although I haven't tried it yet. I am sure there are articles about this but if this info is useful and you get stuck, I'll see if I can step back and figure what I did.

I only have the Snow leopard server disc and have no idea how to split out Rosetta.

My new Macbook Pro won't let the SL disc run anyway...

I did get VMware Fusion, create a partition and then install SL server... which worked. BUT Fusion doesn't support the graphic elements of Final Cut Pro 6 so back to square 1.

I'm looking for a FCP 7 upgrade for my FCP 6... but this is a very expensive proposition for software that is no longer supported by Apple.

So... for the time being, I'm keeping my old Macbook Pro which I've downgraded back to Snow Leopard via Time Machine.

I'm not happy about having to keep my old machine... seriously looking at buying the Adobe Premiere suite for the new machine and staying away, far away, from Final Cut Pro X after this ordeal.

Try installing Snow Leopard Server (with Rosetta OPTION/CUSTOMIZE selected -- I also recommend selecting QuickTime 7) into Parallels. They offer a 14 day free trial download:

I would LOVE to know if FCP 6 works in Snow Leopard Server installed into Parallels. This question comes up very often and I do not post my solution of installing Snow Leopard client into Parallels, as Snow Leopard client is much less expensive than Server, but I do not know if it works with FCP 6:

If it works, a screenshot would be helpful, too! THANKS!

Hey all-

I have Lion and I am running my FCP 6 with absolutely no issues. I had an ancient G5 Mac that was getting ready to die, and bought a new iMac with the Quad core i7. I did a target disk to transfer everything over. Bottom line, everything works just fine including the entire Final Cut Studio 2 series.

Now will it work with Mountain Lion? I am not 100% positive. I have not upgraded yet as I am still looking around for anyone that has had sucess with that. I was given by an associate in the local Apple Store, a link to a website that show compatible applications that work in Lion and in Mountain Lion. Go to www.roaringapps.com

According to them FCP 6 is not an issue running in Mountain Lion. Before I actually do that, I'm still researching to get this confirmed.

Reading through this thread, I have a question. We want to buy a new MAc Pro Tower and install FCP 7... are we going to have issues with Mountain Lion on the straight install? Everything I'm reading says that it should be fine, but I just wanted to ask more seasoned editors, because everyone seems to have upgraded and out system is a G4 with FCP 2 - I know, we never updated. I appreciate any information. 🙂

I should have done an addendum to this thread...
After a bunch of thinking and comparing the pluses and minus'... I decided to go to FCPX. You know, I am extremely happy that I did. I was quite fearful of the capabilities that it currently has, versus the familiarity that I had with FCP6. Well, it does everything and then some! The learning curve for me was fast, and I did a short project for a client 2 days after I downloaded the program. Never thought that I'd get the program that fast. Do yourself a favor, get the new version and don't worry about capatibility with your FCP7.
