i bought the upgrade from the app store and after it finished downloading, the installler tells me i can't use the macintosh hd as a startup disk. since that's what is used, don't know what this is about. i have an imac8,1 with intel core 2 duo , 4gb ram running snow lepard.

How much free space do you have on the hard drive? That is the kind of message that means there is not enough space for the installation to proceed. Do you have an external drive you can move files to and free up some space?
The installer has to see at least 8 GB of free space.
hello, thanks for the quick reply. there is 505.48gb's available. that should be enough.
The iMac8,1 is an early 2008 machine so that should be acceptable to the installer, the memory is fine and you certainly have enough hard drive space.
Try restarting the iMac and then see if the installer will work...everything looks like it should be good to go.
Another thought, are you using FileVault? The installer may refuse to install if FileVault is on and the disk has been encrypted. If that is the case, de-encrypt and turn FileVault off first.
I've done several installations of ML on FileVault volumes without incident. Also, the OP is running 10.6 which doesn't support FileVault 2. Legacy FileVault is irrelevant to whether ML will install.
Please post the complete, verbatim text of the error message, exactly as you saw it, or a screenshot.
I don't use FV but remember seeing something about turning it off before installing...of course the memory could be off on that one. It was a thought as to why ML was balking at this installation.
Boot into safe mode (restart, holding down the SHIFT key) and try installing ML.
hello, sorry it's took so long to get back to you. tried the remedy and still no install. here is a screenshot of what the installer does. and no i don't use a file vault type app. this is just puzzling. maybe a sign to stick with my current os, ramdom glitches and all. i am about to leave for work now, so i won't be available until after 3am cental time. any replies left will be answered on sunday. thanks.
this did the trick, although i'm a little wary that a new os needed to be fool into installing. the app acted as if it cost $19.99. thanks to everyone who helped. now on to playing with it to see what else goes wrong.
